چکیده

Generating good benchmarks is important for the evaluation and improvement of any algorithm for NP-hard problems such as the Boolean satisfiability (SAT) problem. Carefully designed benchmarks are also helpful in the study of the nature of NP-completeness . Probably the most well-known and successful story is the discovery of the phase transition phenomenon (Cheeseman, Kanefsky, and Taylor 1991). More recently, (Achlioptas et al. 2000) pointed out the importance of generating satisfiable problem instances. In this abstract, we consider how to create 3-SAT formulas that look like random but with specific solution structures. In particular, we show that random 3-SAT formulas do not have their solutions distributed randomly in the solution space and we further develop generators to build random 3-SAT formulas with randomly distributed solutions or fixed number of solutions.

Single-solution Random 3-SAT Instances

We study a class of random 3-SAT instances having exactly one solution. The properties of this ensemble considerably differ from those of a random 3-SAT ensemble. It is numerically shown that the running time of several complete and stochastic local search algorithms monotonically increases as the clause density is decreased. Therefore, there is no easy-hard-easy pattern of hardness as for stan...

A Framework for the Specification of Random SAT and QSAT Formulas

We present the framework [q]bfGen which allows the declarative specification of random models for generating SAT and QSAT formulas not necessarily in (prenex) conjunctive normal form. To this end, [q]bfGen realizes a generic formula generator which creates formula instances by interpreting the random model specification expressed in XML. Consequently, the implementation of specific random formu...

Generating SAT instances with community structure

Nowadays, modern SAT solvers are able to efficiently solve many industrial, or real-world, SAT instances. However, the process of development and testing of new SAT solving techniques is conditioned to the finite and reduced number of known industrial benchmarks. Therefore, new models of random SAT instances generation that capture realistically the features of real-world problems can be benefi...

A Model for Generating Random Quantified Boolean Formulas

The quantified boolean formula (QBF) problem is a powerful generalization of the boolean satisfiability (SAT) problem where variables can be both universally and existentially quantified. Inspired by the fruitfulness of the established model for generating random SAT instances, we define and study a general model for generating random QBF instances. We exhibit experimental results showing that ...

Captain Jack: New Variable Selection Heuristics in Local Search for SAT

Stochastic local search (SLS) methods are well known for their ability to find models of randomly generated instances of the propositional satisfiability problem (SAT) very effectively. Two well-known SLS-based SAT solvers are SPARROW, one of the best-performing solvers for random 3-SAT instances, and VE-SAMPLER, which achieved significant performance improvements over previous SLS solvers on S...
